There's going to be a horrendous casualty count. They have such a lack of infrastructure and emergency response capabilities. Really bad luck for them.

I kind of doubt it'll be that high - there's only nine million people in the whole country.

I could see where some would see the humor in your comment but if you'd ever lived through a natural disaster like this, you would not.
I was living in Cancun when hurricane Wilma (force 5) hit and stayed for two days before moving off the penninsula. Via the grace of some Mexican God, only 14 people died but many thousands lost everything they had (without insurance) including jobs and any future prospects. The hotel zone and city were esentially destroyed - much of the city went 11 days without electricity and water and food were scarce.
Give that a try, Maskrider - then make jokes about thousands killed and lives ruined by Mother Nature.

I've been thru naural disasters Toast- won't get into all of the gory details but the 2004 fires that burned thru San Diego county left us without electricity for 17 days-not to mention all of the other damage and expenses and inconveniences associated with the disaster. Neighbors helping neighbor is all that got us thru.
Climb down off your high horse.

I don't think any agency can always store enough supplies for this size of a disaster. I think I'd give the Red Cross a break on this one -

Sure, its only a number ... but its larger than a yearly operating expense of the Haitian government.

Where the hell is this coming from?
Don't get me wrong, a great jesture to be sure, but ... who and when did they figure that amount. I could see 10 mill or even 20.
This guy just throws money around like it grows on trees.
And I'll bet the people that really need the money will never see it, it'll be consumed in a corrupt infastructure of that country.
As far as I know, this is going to be on top of the other expenses of sending the rescue effort teams there.

Obama gave Hamas 900 million. I guess he figures Islamic terrorists are worth more than Haitians.
