Is the general populace that stupid to think that metal detectors would detect plastic explosives? Oh, crap - I forgot where I live - of course they are that stupid...

I'm pretty certain that I would not have said anything about the machines being phased out though...

(and here is a common occurrence: "legislation that passed the House earlier this year but has since stalled in the Senate," - although in this instance, I can't say I'm disappointed)

Magnetometers weren't designed to detect explosives. Only detect metallic objects. We have far more advanced detection units available yet the Govt has been creeping slow to buy the newest and best available.

Most likely they don't give a **** about violating a person's personal space, I'm betting they use "hands on".

Yeap, Israel and a few other places are very "hands on". I like other passengers have been subjected to a mini-interrogation, biometric scans(in the old days before biometrics some passengers were fingerprinted either full or partial). They hand search everything. You empty your pockets, all garments are hand checked and x-rayed. They may check you half a dozen times by the time you make it to the gate. At the gate, another hand search. Electronics are turned on and inspected, some even opened up. Very thorough. If you red flag, you'll miss the flight! Expect your asshole to be checked until the rubber glove feels the back of your teeth. If you do try something on the plane while in flight or on the ground, you'll likely be shot no questions asked. Pilots are armed as well as "other personnel". Carriers besides Israeli based carriers are put through all kinds of **** as well.

They have very high end detection equipment in place.
