Nigerian, out of Yemen. Says he was acting on behalf of AlQuada. Ended up with 3rd degree burns. 278 folks on that plane can thank their lucky stars he was a klutz and not smart enough to pull it off.
We're flying next week. At least security should be elevated for the short term.

It would seem the Klutz didn't know how to mix the explosive used, thankfully only resulting in a bad fire, but it's the thought that counts
How did this Yo-Yo manage to get on an airliner, with anything strapped to his leg.
Security must be awful Lax in Amsterdam
It's a wake-up call to all airport security systems

I think the security lapse took place in Lagos, Nigeria, where he originally boarded.

I have seen it all when it comes to so called airport security. Some places really have it together, MOST others do not. This guy was on a watch list but not the No Fly list. Why? But, he did pass through both Customs and Security coming to here. No flags? Truth is, this guys should have been shaken down long before he got to where he did. Had he been, this would not have happened.
Speaking of boarding security, as far as I am concerned, TSA needs to be disbanded, many their methods with it. They have failed numerous inspections where simulated bombs got past the checkpoints. Another severe useless waste of taxpayer dollars. I have been in developing countries that had multi-layered security that hands down was as good as I have ever seen. The holes can be plugged but in turn, the passengers are going to have to tolerate more than they do now. I guess it will take a couple of planes getting blown out of their air to write the new manual in blood.

Here is TSA's response to this further proving how utterly worthless the agency is:
Some airlines were telling passengers on Saturday that new government security regulations prohibit them from leaving their seats beginning an hour before landing
The regulations are a response to a suspected terrorism incident on Christmas Day.
Air Canada said in a statement that new rules imposed by the Transportation Security Administration limit on-board activities by passengers and crew in U.S. airspace. The airline said that during the final hour of flight passengers must remain seated. They won't be allowed access to carryon baggage or to have any items on their laps.
Bear in mind this does absolutely nothing to prevent a terrorist from bringing a bomb on a flight a detonating it. I have seen demonstrations where a tester easily passed screening with a simulated device laced with detectable traces of Syntex within it. The item was concealed in a jacket along with an incendiary trigger that only had to be pulled to start the detonation sequence.
Bad news is the failure rate on detection of such devices is extremely high. The answer to this, easy. Move all the airlines into a security system identical to El Al Airlines. That will cure the problem very quickly!

My two cents is that I don't feel too bad if a man who deliberately wanted to kill almost three hundred innocent people had his nuts burned off by a bomb that failed to properly detonate.
