From the stories though, it appears that if you didn't respond to the phishing email, they wouldn't have your password? They didn't hack anything, they just asked people to give them their password, and they did.

I use hotmail, I do not open fishy e-mails and if only a little over 10K accounts were affected, it's a drop in the bucket since there are approx 14 million + hotmail accounts worldwide. . .
