The question comes up as the linked article says that there was no return fire, yet the media and eveyone else is calling it a shootout ..
If only one side does the shooting can it be called such?

Well, there were shots fired and it was outside - so I guess so.
Maybe it's like when I "taped" my daughter's graduation on my digital camcorder!

Nope. . . it's just a "shooting". "Shootout" distinctly connotes a contest between two or more shooters.
Well, at least that's my humble opinion. . .

Humhumhum, thumbing the USCG LED manual Thinking causing brain smoke and flames:D. Nope Toast is right, Shootout distinctly connotes a contest between two or more shooters. A shooting is just an idiot with a gun killing a unarmed human.
