It is important not in itself, but because it enlightens the public, supports social interaction, and facilitates democracy.

:biglol: Sure it does!

Interesting article.

One thing, I think, that makes journalists have value is their access to information that the rest of us can't get - a news conference or interview with a head-of-state, for example, or having the resources to be on the scene for breaking stories or in war zones, etc.

The second is interpretation of news and events, such as columnists provide. This second, however, is very competitive because there are many sources now for opinion and analysis; what paid journalists provide has to be top-notch.

Whether you can build a daily newspaper around these, or a TV news program, is debatable.

The other stuff is just "filler" that pretends to give you value for your money (or your time watching commercials in the case of TV).

No doubt easy access to the internet is killing traditional sources. It may be that the news/commentary/lifestyle business is just too fragmented now for single large sources to survive well. I think the author has it right that journalism providers have to become specialized and expert in certain fields, but that may also mean they become smaller.

Shouldn't that be facilitates Democrats? I can't say for the rest of the world, but from where I sit here in the US, journalists have slanted the media to the point that it is next to useless.

Maybe you should qualify that to call them "journalists in the mainstream media", if that even makes it accurate. It seems to me that plenty of journalists (including commentators - Rush Limbaugh and Ann Colter are journalists) - do not follow the herd.

You don't have to look far to find a diversity of opinion in American journalism, and though you think liberal journalism is in the ascendancy, and it may well be, it is not the only source to which people can turn.

I'm kind of waiting for people to grow tired of that too.
