If sports were purely for the immediate entertainment value, this stance might have some traction. But the fact is that a sport, for an enthusiast (a fan), involves a close knowledge of statistics... so close and significant that it's part of the enthusiasm.

If an athlete takes drugs - say, a baseball player bulking up with drugs so he can break a home-run record - then the statistics become meaningless, and to some extent the sport becomes meaningless too.
